Moving to another kommune
In short
Moving in Denmark is one compulsory action and several optional ones that nobody will remind you about. The compulsory one: report your new address. You do it online, to your new kommune — nobody tells the old one, it finds out itself through the register.
Your doctor, your housing benefit, nursery and school, though, do not move with you. Those are separate actions in separate places, and that is exactly where people trip up.

Yes, if you are changing your address in Denmark — even within the same town. Any change of where you live has to be reported.
Steps
Report the move online
On borger.dk, logged in with , find the section "Oplys kommunen om ny adresse og vælg læge" and click "Meld flytning og vælg læge". You can do it for the whole family at once.
Most kommuner will not take it earlier than 28 days before the move. Later is possible, but that is already overdue.

Made a mistake? You can delete the request as long as the kommune has not processed it.
Choose a doctor in the same minute — while it is free
This is the most expensive small detail in the whole guide. Changing your doctor together with the move is free. Doing it separately, on its own, costs money (40 kr. in 2026).
And one more thing: the doctor does not change automatically. If you choose nothing, you stay registered with your old doctor — wherever you have moved to.

Know the distance rule
If your new home is more than 15 km from your old doctor (in Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Tårnby and Dragør — 5 km), you choose: keep your doctor or take a new one nearby.
Keep the old one and you will not be able to go to the nearest doctor with an ordinary illness that is not life-threatening. Choose from the ones marked "åbent for tilgang".
What happens by itself, and what does not
Half the work is done without you. The other half never gets done at all. Here is the line:

Boligstøtte: 30 days and the right order
does not move with you — you apply for it again. And there are two rules here that are easy to break.
First: apply within 30 days of moving in — then the money is counted from the day you moved in. Second: first report the address to the kommune, and only then apply for boligstøtte — only starts looking at the application once it sees the move in the register.

Nursery and school — from scratch, in the new kommune
The fact that your current nursery was told about the move does not mean you have been given a place in the new kommune. There you need a new application through Digital Pladsanvisning, and for school, enrolment in the school district.
And separately: if you are moving in with a partner, tell Udbetaling Danmark that your status has changed — otherwise the payments get recalculated backwards.

- The tenancy contract — for boligstøtte

Danish words you will see
- Borgerservice
- The citizens' service centre in your kommune: address, CPR, sundhedskort.
- Boligstøtte
- State help towards your rent. You apply on borger.dk, and Udbetaling Danmark pays it.
- Udbetaling Danmark
- The state body that pays housing support, child benefit and pensions. It is not the kommune.
- Egen læge
- Your family doctor. Their name is on your sundhedskort, and you reach specialists through them.
- Sundhedskort
- The yellow health insurance card with your CPR number and your doctor on it.
- CPR-nummer
- Your personal registration number. You need it for almost everything.
Common mistakes
- Thinking you have to report it BEFORE the move. The deadline is 5 days after. It counts from your first night at the new address.
- Reporting it to the old kommune. You report to the new one. The old one finds out through the register.
- Not choosing a doctor while you report the move. Later it already costs money, and it will not change by itself.
- Not writing your surname on the letterbox. The most common official complaint: cards and letters simply do not get delivered.
- Applying for boligstøtte before reporting the address. The application gets put aside, and the 30-day window runs out meanwhile.
